One of the recent issues Timothy Snyder is addressing occurred the first weekend in February as USAID was closed by Elon Musk and Trump without any democratic process followed or any serious review of the program -- after this illegal closure action was taken Elon Musk posted this on his social media platform X on February 2, 2025: "We spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper." Here is a conservative leaning former USAID director explaining why he believes this was a major fail:



There is a strong argument to be made that the people who control the (inaccurate) narrative (like Elon with X, Trump with Truth Social) also increasingly are able to control us -- much like in the dystopian novels many of us have read (1984 by George Orwell) where truth is no longer objective. Plus, Trump is intimidating the traditional media in the USA (he is suing them when they don't say nice things about him - yes, he really is going after the free press). Laughably, his own social media platform is named "Truth Social" despite his extremely poor record of conveying actual truth. He is renowned for lying. For example, in early February 2025 he posted this on his social media platform regarding USAID:

“LOOKS LIKE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS HAVE BEEN STOLLEN [SIC] AT USAID, AND OTHER AGENCIES, MUCH OF IT GOING TO THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA AS A ‘PAYOFF’ FOR CREATING GOOD STORIES ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS,”

“THE LEFT WING ‘RAG,’ KNOWN AS ‘POLITICO,’ SEEMS TO HAVE RECEIVED $8,000,000. Did the New York Times receive money??? Who else did???

“THIS COULD BE THE BIGGEST SCANDAL OF THEM ALL, PERHAPS THE BIGGEST IN HISTORY! THE DEMOCRATS CAN’T HIDE FROM THIS ONE. TOO BIG, TOO DIRTY!”

PEOPLE OF THE USA, this is not a drill. This is happening in real time. Consider that we are increasingly becoming hostage to the few at the top. Consider also the irony of the world's richest human, Elon, pulling the plug on aid to many of the world's poorest people...And it isn't just the USAID issue - this is the tip of the iceberg. No legitimate legal process is being followed as the executive branch feeds many of our institutions into the wood chipper on a whim.
